For all the amazing technology that humans have developed, the marvels of what it can do and so much more, we still have huge areas where we are supremely ignorant. This includes most of the human body! As we graze rather than eat, to keep our insatiable appetite for electronic connection fed, we miss the point on what needs the best food and how. Our guts!

I have long been aware – are you? – about the value of our microbiome.

  • Do you know what it is?
  • How it is formed for us and when?
  • Did you know you should have 2 kgs of bugs in your system – or it will be an early goodnight to your stay on the Earth!
  • Do you know how these bugs work?
  • What they do for you?
  • How relevant they are to obesity?
  • That your stool is roughly half living bacteria by weight.
  • That your gut is called your second brain – for a very good reason.

So many questions! What about answers?  

Unless we start with this super-cocktail of bugs, out bodies will struggle to gain them later. What you eat in pregnancy will determine your chances of your baby having a healthy life! This might sound trite, and obvious, but how many actually remember this and act accordingly when pregnant?

Unless we have the right bug populations in our guts we will have a compromised health, no matter how technologically smart we think we are! For ever. No super switch or operation can change it. This is why diet is vital, and from before the beginning – to deliver healthy eggs and sperm. They might both be tiny, but their impact is massive and lasting.

In seeking to have good health, what do we do for our microbes? Is our gut simply there to break down food into some basic nutrients? Or is it a mobile digestion chambers for bacteria? Every day, food goes in one end and microbes come out the other.

The human gut is roughly 26 feet in length. Hammered flat, it would have a surface area of a tennis court. 70% of our immune system activity occurs there. The gut has its own nervous system; it contains as many neurons as the spinal cord. About 95% of the body's serotonin, a neurotransmitter usually discussed in the context of depression, is produced in the gut. Healthy gut………healthy mind!

Most of our microbes dwell in the colon, the final loop of the intestine, where they help us break down fibre in our diet, harvest calories, and protect us from micro-marauders. But, that’s not all. “Animals raised without microbes essentially lack a functioning immune system. Entire repertoires of white blood cells remain dormant; their intestines don’t develop the proper creases and crypts; their hearts are shrunken; genes in the brain that should be in the “off” position remain stuck ‘on’. Without their microbes, animals aren’t really ‘normal’.”

“Children in the developing world have many more types of microbes than their counterparts in Europe or North America. As a result, it’s thought, they generally develop allergies and asthma at lower rates than those in industrialized nations. In the developed world, children raised in microbially rich environments, such as with pets, on farms, or attending day care, have a lower risk of allergic disease than kids raised in more sterile environments.”

So, for goodness sake let’s all get our diet and lifestyle sorted! It’s no good waiting for Nanny NHS to tell us, and tell us how to do this. We need to do it now, help others to do it, and then hopefully need less of Nanny NHS at a later date. Get wheatgrass juice and broccoli sprout juice now!
