When I grow wheat to create wheatgrass, or when I grow any other seed that might to be eaten as whole sprouts, I'm aware that we're starting with the basic kit nature provides, and turning it into a simple juice that will be part of a balanced diet.
The seed, coming with the complete genetic code to make me a healthy food is hard to beat. So, today we read more about the wretched un-folding salmonella saga in America, with thousands now suffering, and tens of millions of eggs being recalled. You can read more about the contaminated egg fiasco here. Personally,
I'm not surprised it's happened. For anyone who's seen the film Food Inc., there won't be any surprises either. The way in which the Americans seem happy to produce food, and so many of them happy to consume it without any second thought to how it is produced, bemuses me. I guess it's simply that many people probably do know that not everything is right, feel incapacitated and turn a blind eye while continuing to consume, and therefore inadvertently condone unacceptable practices. Unfortunately it's not just Americans. It may not be happening on the same scale here, but many of the practices are similar.
What seems totally unacceptable to me is when people in positions of power, who have the capability and tools to change things for the better, sit on their hands. I'm not sure why they don't take action, although I suspect that in many cases, they are "sat upon". You only have to look at the list of main sponsors for events such as the 2012 Olympics, football's Premiership, etc., and we can see that the big food companies are enshrined within government. Disappointing to say the least.
The sooner we get back to realising that we need to take more personal responsibility for what we put on our plate, and put in our mouth, the better health we will all have. I know that some think this is a luxury only affordable for those who have above-average incomes. I totally disagree. Selective sourcing, planning, thinking, waste reduction and more can make this possible for anybody.
